Every Filipino nurse aiming for the UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand hits the same fork in the road: IELTS Academic or OET? Both are accepted by the major nursing regulators, both test the same four skills — but they feel very different to sit, and they cost very different amounts. Here is how to choose, based on your destination, your budget, and where you can actually book a seat in the Philippines.

What the regulators accept

For the UK’s NMC — the benchmark most nurses plan around — you can qualify with either IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (with 6.5 accepted in writing) or OET grade B (with C+ accepted in writing). Regulators in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand accept both tests too, though exact score requirements vary slightly by board, so always confirm on the regulator’s own page before booking.

How the two tests differ

IELTS Academic is a general academic English test: essays on abstract topics, graphs to describe, lectures to summarise. OET is built entirely around healthcare scenarios — writing a referral letter, taking a patient history, listening to a handover. Many nurses find OET more natural because it tests English they already use on the ward. The trade-off is price: OET costs roughly USD 455, versus around USD 250–280 for IELTS (as of mid-2026; check current PHP pricing when you book).

How to decide

• UK or Ireland, clinical background strong, budget available: OET. The healthcare framing plays to your strengths, and the C+ writing concession is forgiving.
• Tight budget, or you may need the score for a visa as well as registration: IELTS Academic. It is cheaper, runs more frequently across the Philippines, and is accepted for immigration purposes more broadly.
• Australia or NZ: either works for registration — check the current AHPRA / NCNZ score tables, then choose on cost and test-date availability in your city.
• Already failed one test twice: switch. Nurses who plateau on IELTS writing often clear OET writing, and vice versa.
